Sophie Hunter is a versatile director shaping avant-garde theatre across Europe and North America
In short: Beyond her public profile, Sophie Hunter is a prolific theatre director and playwright with a career spanning international stages. From experimental puppetry to opera, her work explores complex narratives. She bridges traditional classics with modern performance art, consistently pushing the boundaries of what is possible in contemporary stage production.
Born in London in 1978, Sophie Hunter built a multidisciplinary career that blends acting, music, and directing. After studying Modern Languages at the University of Oxford, she trained in avant-garde theatre at L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris and later under Anne Bogart in New York City. This rigorous foundation informs her work, which often experiments with form and medium, such as her collaboration with the Phantom Limb Company on marionette and puppetry productions.
Hunter’s directorial career gained significant momentum in 2007 when her theatre collective, Boileroom, won the Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Award for the play The Terrific Electric. Since then, she has directed a wide range of projects, including revivals of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts and Benjamin Britten’s opera The Rape of Lucretia. Her work is noted for its creative ambition, with critics describing her 2015 production of Phaedra as both exquisitely realized and astonishing.
Her influence extends into public art and film production. In 2013, she developed Loma Lights, one of New York City’s largest public arts programs. She has also served as a creative director for the theatre company Emursive, working on immersive experiences like Sleep No More. More recently, she has moved into film production, notably working on the adaptation of the novel The End We Start From. Fluent in French and Italian, Hunter remains a multifaceted artist whose projects continue to challenge conventional theatrical boundaries.
