In short: After decades of celebrating African-American music and culture, the Soul Train Music Awards are being reimagined for a modern media landscape. Following a three-year break, the ceremony returns in 2026 to Chicago, the city where the iconic television program was originally produced, promising a fresh format and expanded broadcast reach.

Since its 1987 debut, the Soul Train Music Awards have served as a cornerstone for honoring excellence in R&B and soul. The awards are produced by the same company behind the legendary television program, with a voting body comprised of active industry professionals, including radio programmers and music retailers. Throughout its history, the show has been hosted by luminaries such as Patti LaBelle and Luther Vandross, and it remains a vital platform for showcasing contemporary talent through live performances.

The physical trophy itself has evolved alongside the ceremony. While the original 1987 award was a bronze abstract figure called the Vanguard, the event became famous for its African ceremonial mask trophy, known as the Heritage Award, which served as a visual trademark for years. In 2009, the design was updated by Tristan Eaton of Thunderdog Studios to reflect the program's train mascot, with manufacturing handled by the New York-based Society Awards. Beyond the trophies, the show has introduced unique traditions, such as the 2015 Soul Cypher, where artists perform freestyle arrangements of their hits.

The ceremony has faced significant shifts, including a cancellation in 2008 due to the Writers Guild of America strike and the health challenges of Don Cornelius. After moving from its traditional home in Greater Los Angeles to cities like Atlanta and Las Vegas, the show was placed on hiatus following the 2023 edition. BET CEO Scott Mills noted the need to reimagine the event for a changing media landscape. The 2026 return to Chicago marks a homecoming, featuring a two-hour celebration produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment that will air on CBS, BET, and other Paramount Skydance channels.
