In short: Located on the border of North and South Carolina, this sprawling compound is a relic of mid-century American road culture. Famous for its relentless billboard countdowns and faux-Mexican theme, the site has evolved from a simple beer stand into a surreal destination featuring observation towers, motocross tracks, and peculiar statues.

Developed by Alan Schafer in 1950, South of the Border began as a humble beer stand called South of the Border Depot. The site expanded rapidly through the 1960s, eventually encompassing a 350-acre compound that includes a 300-room motel, a 200-foot observation tower, and the largest indoor reptile exhibit in the United States, known as Reptile Lagoon.

The attraction is defined by its intentionally campy, mimetic architecture and surreal aesthetic. Visitors encounter large statues of animals, a geodesic dome swimming pool, and neon-drenched signage. The site’s mascot, Pedro—a caricature of a Mexican bandito—has long been a subject of controversy. While Schafer defended the character as a light-hearted joke, critics have labeled the imagery as culturally offensive or racist. P. Nicole King has noted that the mascot reflects how the era exoticized Mexico, even suggesting the design was partially modeled after Schafer himself.

Beyond its kitsch, the venue serves as a hub for diverse activities, including a motocross training facility that hosts regional races. Its cultural footprint is significant, appearing in various films and television shows, from Jean Shepherd’s storytelling to the animated series Futurama. Despite its fame, the attraction faces modern challenges; in 2025, a portion of the property was listed for sale, and in April 2026, a major fire destroyed the Burrito Loco restaurant. Today, it remains a singular example of roadside Americana, employing about 300 people and continuing to operate as a landmark for travelers on Interstate 95.
