In short: In 1940, as the shadows of World War II lengthened, a strategic agreement between Canada, Newfoundland, and the United Kingdom birthed a vital air base. What began as a defensive necessity near St. John's has evolved from a military outpost into a critical international gateway.

The origins of the facility, now known as St. John's International Airport, lie in the geopolitical anxieties of 1939. Following concerns in the Canadian Parliament regarding the security of the Dominion of Newfoundland against German attacks, negotiations between Canada, the United Kingdom, and Newfoundland led to an agreement in 1940. The Canadian government committed to constructing an air base near Torbay, provided Newfoundland allowed no civil use without permission and Canada covered all costs. Construction by the McNamara Construction Company began in April 1941, costing approximately $1.5 million to establish runways, hangars, and aprons.

The airfield officially opened under the Royal Canadian Air Force on 15 December 1941. During the peak war years, the station hosted over 2,000 RCAF personnel and served as a joint hub for the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Corps. While not as massive as Gander or Goose Bay, it remained a busy strategic site. Following the war, the facility saw shifting jurisdictions, including a period where the United States Air Force utilized the buildings for the Military Air Transport Service.

The airport's history is marked by significant transitions and challenges. In 1946, a devastating fire destroyed the wartime control tower, causing $1.5 million in damage. Over the decades, the site transitioned from military use to civilian operation, eventually becoming a modern international terminal that underwent a $50 million renovation in 2002. Today, it remains a vital piece of infrastructure, even designated as one of five Canadian airports suitable for Space Shuttle emergency landings.
