The fighter jet that traded a contract for a seat in space
In short: In 2003, Malaysia signed a US$900 million deal for the Sukhoi Su-30MKM. The agreement was so significant it included a unique orbital trade: Russia agreed to train two Malaysians for space travel and send one to the International Space Station as part of the fighter jet purchase.
The Su-30MKM, known by NATO as Flanker-H, is a twin-engine supermaneuverable fighter developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau. While it shares an airframe and thrust vectoring engines with the Indian Su-30MKI, the Malaysian variant is distinguished by its specific avionics suite. It features a digital fly-by-wire system, canards, and two Saturn AL-31FP engines producing 27,500 lb of thrust each with afterburners. This configuration allows for extreme agility in close-in dogfights, enabling pilots to rapidly point the aircraft at targets. The procurement process was a major shift for the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), which had previously operated primarily Western aircraft like the F/A-18D Hornet and F-5E Tiger II. Despite being offered Boeing's F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, Malaysia chose the Russian-made Su-30MKM via a government-to-government offset agreement. This deal involved manufacturing components—such as canards, stabilizers, and fins—by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in India for the Irkut Corporation. The aircraft's capabilities are diverse, including an 8,000 kg payload capacity and a combat radius of 1,296 km. It is equipped with advanced systems from various nations: Thales Group (France) provides the head-up display and targeting pods, while Avitronics (South Africa) supplies the missile approach warning sensors. In 2016, it became the first Russian-made Sukhoi to successfully drop a GBU-12 Paveway laser-guided bomb. Recently, the fleet faced engine issues leading to a RM2.2 billion local upgrade program completed in January 2025.
