How the Roman Empire shaped the Iberian Peninsula for six centuries
In short: Long before the modern borders of Spain and Portugal were drawn, a single imperial power held sway over the region known as Hispania. Discover how six hundred years of Roman rule left an indelible mark on the geography and history of the West.
The Roman presence in the Iberian Peninsula, referred to in antiquity as Hispania, spanned approximately 600 years. This era of dominion was part of a much larger imperial arc that began with the establishment of the Roman Empire in 27 BCE, following the collapse of the Roman Republic. The empire, centered in Rome, would eventually see its Western territories face a final eclipse during the 5th century CE.
The transition from Republic to Empire was marked by significant internal instability. During the 1st century BCE, a period of civil wars and unrest characterized the era of Julius Caesar, whose rise to power as dictator preceded the formal imperial structure. Following Caesar's assassination in 44 BCE, a triumvirate consisting of Mark Antony, Lepidus, and Octavian held sway. It was only after Octavian's victory at the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE that he was crowned Augustus, the first emperor.
Under Augustus, the government functioned as a 'principate,' a system that blended monarchical power with Republican elements, such as the Senate. This era of relative stability (27 BCE–14 CE) set the stage for the Julio-Claudian dynasty, which included figures ranging from the administrator Tiberius to the despot Nero. While the political landscape of the central empire shifted through various dynasties and even periods of 'damnatio memoriae'—where emperors like Nero were officially erased from the record—the administrative and territorial reach of Rome continued to define the Iberian landscape for centuries.
