In short: Before they were a successful act in their own right, The Sweet Inspirations were the secret weapon behind the biggest hits of the 1960s. From Aretha Franklin to Jimi Hendrix, this Newark-born group provided the essential vocal textures that defined an era of American music before touring with Elvis Presley.

Founded in 1963 by Cissy Houston in Newark, New Jersey, The Sweet Inspirations emerged from a lineage of gospel singers, including Houston's nieces Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick. Originally known as The Girls, the group evolved from the Gospelaires, a professional session outfit that had cut their teeth backing artists like Sam The Man Taylor and The Drifters. By the time they signed with Atlantic Records in 1967, the lineup solidified around Houston, Sylvia Shemwell, Myrna Smith, and Estelle Brown.

The group’s influence on popular music is vast, as they provided backing vocals for legendary artists including Van Morrison, Dusty Springfield, and Solomon Burke. Their work with Aretha Franklin is particularly notable, appearing on classics such as Chain of Fools and I Say a Little Prayer. In 1968, they achieved their own chart success with the single Sweet Inspiration, which peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Grammy nomination, making them one of the few all-female vocal groups to receive such recognition at the time.

Beyond their studio prowess, the group is perhaps best remembered for their long-standing association with Elvis Presley. Starting in 1969, they served as both his backup singers and warm-up act, a role they maintained until his death in 1977. While the group saw various lineup changes over the decades—including the departure of Houston in 1969 to pursue a solo career—they continued to perform and record well into the 21st century. In 2014, the original members were inducted into the National Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame, cementing their legacy as one of the most versatile and enduring vocal ensembles in music history.
