The fortress that shaped Paris but was erased from history
In short: Discover the clandestine history of the Tower of the Temple, a structure so imposing it dominated the medieval Parisian skyline for centuries before being systematically dismantled.
For 200 years, the Tower of the Temple stood as the most powerful building in Paris, surpassing the Louvre in height and commanding the city with three-metre-thick walls. Owned by the warrior monks of the Knights Templar, the compound functioned as a massive financial network that bankrolled both kings and crusades, with the order owning approximately one-tenth of the city.
The fortress was seized during a massive operation on a Friday the 13th, resulting in the arrest of over 100 Templars. While the building survived for another 500 years, Napoleon Bonaparte eventually ordered its total removal from the map. Today, the layout of the Marais district serves as a ghost of this vanished empire.
