Tiran Island: A tiny, strategic Red Sea outpost at the center of regional power
In short: Spanning about 80 square kilometres, Tiran Island controls the narrow strait connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Once a Byzantine toll station and home to an autonomous Jewish community, this uninhabited island has spent decades as a strategic pawn in the complex territorial disputes of the Middle East.
Tiran Island has long been a focal point for regional control due to its position at the entrance of the Strait of Tiran, Israel's only access to the Red Sea from the Gulf of Aqaba. Historical records suggest the island may be the ancient Iotabe, a 6th-century toll station. By the 5th century, it was a diocese under the Roman province of Palaestina Tertia, though it appears to have been abandoned by the time of the Islamic conquests. In modern times, the island's strategic value surged as it became a critical bottleneck for shipping to the Israeli port of Eilat.
The 20th-century history of Tiran is defined by shifting sovereignty and military occupation. In 1950, Saudi Arabia transferred administration to Egypt to prevent potential Israeli expansion, as the Saudis lacked the naval capacity to defend it. Egypt subsequently used the island to enforce blockades against Israeli-bound shipping, which served as a primary casus belli for the 1967 Six-Day War. Following the conflict, Israel occupied the island until its return to Egypt in 1982 under the terms of the Egypt–Israel peace treaty, which guaranteed freedom of navigation through the straits.
The island's status remained legally contentious for years. While the Egyptian government sought to transfer sovereignty to Saudi Arabia in 2016, the move faced intense domestic opposition and conflicting court rulings. Ultimately, in June 2017, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi ratified the agreement, ceding the island to Saudi Arabia. By 2022, Israel approved the transfer, clearing the way for the eventual withdrawal of the Multinational Force and Observers. Future plans for the island include a proposed causeway linking the Egyptian and Saudi mainlands, further cementing its role in the region's evolving infrastructure.
