In short: Tony Mokbel rose from humble beginnings in a Melbourne suburb to orchestrate a massive drug empire known as The Company. His criminal career, marked by high-stakes escapes, international manhunts, and complex legal battles involving police informants, eventually collapsed under the weight of the Lawyer X scandal and shifting judicial rulings.

Born in Kuwait to Lebanese parents, Tony Mokbel moved to Melbourne at age eight. His early life was marked by the tragic death of his father when Mokbel was 16, an event he later identified as a turning point that led him to abandon school. After working in various service roles, including a milk bar and a pizza shop, his trajectory shifted toward crime. By the 1990s, he had moved from petty offenses to large-scale drug trafficking, eventually establishing The Company, a syndicate that dominated the local amphetamine trade.

Mokbel’s operations reached staggering scales. In 2000, he organized a single shipment of ephedrine capable of producing two billion dollars worth of street drugs. His wealth grew rapidly, allowing him to acquire luxury assets like Ferraris and racehorses. Despite police scrutiny and a near-fatal beating by a rival gang member in 2002, his influence persisted. He even utilized high-profile brothels to launder millions of dollars in illicit proceeds, demonstrating the sophisticated reach of his criminal enterprise.

The turning point for his downfall began with the Lawyer X scandal, where it was revealed that his barrister, Nicola Gobbo, was secretly acting as a police informant. This revelation triggered a series of successful appeals against his previous convictions. After fleeing to Greece in 2006 and being extradited back to Australia in 2008, Mokbel spent years in prison. Following legal challenges regarding the integrity of the evidence against him, his sentences were progressively reduced, leading to his eventual release on bail and the withdrawal of remaining charges by February 2026.
