From a shy teenager to an R&B star with 32 million records sold
In short: Born in Petersburg, Virginia, Tremaine Aldon Neverson never expected a music career. After discovering his vocal talent at 14, he transitioned from a shy child to a global R&B force, eventually selling over 32 million records worldwide through a series of chart-topping albums.
Born on November 28, 1984, to Claude Neverson Jr. and April (Gholson) Tucker, the artist known as Trey Songz did not initially aspire to be a musician. Raised as a military brat, his shyness meant he only recognized his vocal abilities at the age of 14. It was not until others noticed his talent that singing became a reality for him. His mother was only seventeen when he was born. This upbringing as a military child shaped his early years before he found fame.
His professional ascent began in 2003 when producer Troy Taylor discovered him, leading to a joint venture between Songbook Entertainment and Atlantic Records. After graduating from Petersburg High School in 2002, Neverson moved to New Jersey to begin recording. Released on July 26, 2005, his first album, I Gotta Make It, sold 40,000 copies during its opening week and reached number 20 on the Billboard 200. He originally used the alias Prince of Virginia for several mixtapes. These early recordings helped him gain significant regional attention.
Songz's career is defined by consistent chart presence and significant commercial success. His third album, Ready, released on August 31, 2009, became his first to reach number one on the Billboard 200 and eventually earned a Platinum certification from the RIAA in June 2014. His fifth album, Chapter V, released in 2012, also debuted at the top of the Billboard 200. To date, his work in singles and albums has reached a global sales milestone of over 32 million records. His single 'Say Aah' remains one of his most successful hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, his album 'Passion, Pain & Pleasure' reached number two on the Billboard 200.
