How a garage-based team survived being bought, renamed, and outbid
In short: Starting in Mike Booth's garage with only six employees, Turtle Rock Studios has navigated a turbulent history of corporate acquisitions and studio closures. From being renamed Valve South to facing an intense $11 million bidding war for their own project, this developer has constantly redefined the cooperative horror genre.
Founded in March 2002 by Mike Booth, Turtle Rock Studios began with just six employees working out of a garage. The studio's early identity was deeply tied to its founders' roots at Westwood Pacific, where Mike Booth, Phil Robb, and Chris Ashton worked on titles like Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2. The studio's name itself was a tribute to the neighborhood where Booth lived.
The company's trajectory has been marked by significant corporate shifts. In 2008, Valve acquired the studio, renaming it Valve South and moving several employees to Seattle. However, difficulties in communication and project progression led Valve to dissolve the Valve South entity in 2009. This allowed the original team to re-establish Turtle Rock Studios as an independent entity on March 17, 2010, led by the partnership of Robb and Ashton.
The studio's most famous achievement, Left 4 Dead, emerged from a cancelled wizard combat project and was heavily inspired by the film 28 Days Later. While the studio has seen massive growth—expanding to over 70 staff members between 2011 and 2014—it has also faced intense competition. During the bankruptcy of publisher THQ, Turtle Rock found itself in a bidding war for its own project, Evolve. Although Turtle Rock held just $250,000, Take-Two Interactive won the auction with an $11 million offer to obtain the series.
Today, the studio operates under the parent company Slamfire Inc., which was acquired by Tencent in December 2021. While the studio continues to develop original intellectual properties like Back 4 Blood, its legacy remains anchored in the cooperative gameplay mechanics it pioneered.
