The relentless pursuit of a world number two in badminton
In short: Wang Zhiyi’s career is a masterclass in professional resilience. From her early days in the Jingzhou sports school to navigating high-stakes rivalries against global icons, she has navigated years of title droughts and grueling three-set battles to cement herself as one of China's elite athletes.
Wang Zhiyi’s ascent to the world stage began in 2009 at the Hubei provincial training centre. By 2016, she joined the Chinese national team, eventually becoming a staple of the squad that secured victories in the Uber Cup (2020, 2024) and the Sudirman Cup (2021, 2023). Her early career was marked by significant junior success, including a silver medal at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires and a bronze at the World Junior Championships.
Her professional trajectory has been defined by both rapid triumphs and periods of intense struggle. After winning her first BWF World Tour title at the 2019 U.S. Open, Wang faced several difficult seasons, notably 2023, where she failed to secure a single title. However, she rebounded in 2024 to reach a career-high ranking of world number 2 on November 19, winning six titles and her first Super 1000 at the China Open.
A defining narrative of Wang's career is her rivalry with An Se-young. The two have faced off in numerous high-profile finals, including a notable nine-match losing streak for Wang against An before finally breaking it in straight games at the 2026 All England Open. Despite these hurdles, Wang has consistently remained at the pinnacle of the sport, reaching an impressive 11 finals in the 2025 season alone.
While she is primarily recognized as a badminton powerhouse, records indicate the name Wang Zhiyi is also associated with a Chinese composer, highlighting the diversity of talent within the region's cultural landscape.
