In short: While many iconic spirit brands are owned by massive conglomerates, William Grant & Sons remains one of the largest Scotch distillers still held by a single family. From its 1887 roots in Dufftown to producing the world's best-selling single malt, it balances heritage with aggressive global expansion.

Founded in 1887 by William Grant, the company began with the construction of the Glenfiddich distillery. By Christmas Day of that same year, the facility was operational. The family expanded quickly, building the neighboring Balvenie distillery in 1892 and establishing a presence in South Ayrshire with the Girvan grain whisky distillery in 1963. Today, as of 2024, the company remains under the stewardship of Grant's descendants, maintaining its status as a premier family-owned entity in an industry often dominated by corporate giants like Diageo and Pernod Ricard.

The company’s portfolio is vast and geographically diverse. While it holds an 8% market share of Scotch whisky—shipping roughly 7.6 million cases annually—its reach extends far beyond Scotland. It produces vodka in Iceland (Reyka), brandy in France (Raynal & Cie), and has expanded into the American whiskey market with brands like Fistful of Bourbon. Notably, during the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, the company pivoted production at three distilleries to create approximately five million litres of ethanol for hand sanitiser.

Strategic acquisitions have defined its modern growth. In 2010, the group spent €171m to acquire the Tullamore D.E.W. brand and facilities. They also purchased Drambuie for an estimated £100 million in 2014. Even their approach to 'rare' spirits is unique; they have produced one-off whiskies like Snow Phoenix, a blend of various ages recovered after heavy snow destroyed a warehouse. This mix of family tradition, massive industrial scale, and calculated diversification ensures their continued dominance in the global spirits landscape.

The company also maintains deep ties to Scottish culture and industry standards. It is a member of the Scotch Whisky Association and has received the Queen's Award to Industry for Outstanding Export Achievement. Despite being a private family concern, global impact occurs via prominent labels such as Glenfiddich; this specific single malt Scotch achieved the highest worldwide sales figures during 2016.
