The 2022 Wimbledon Championships marked a historic shift in tradition and international tennis politics.
In short: The 135th edition of Wimbledon was defined by more than just elite grass-court tennis. Amidst a record-breaking prize fund and the introduction of Middle Sunday play, the tournament became the center of a geopolitical firestorm that led to unprecedented sanctions from the sport's primary governing bodies.
The 2022 tournament, held from 27 June to 10 July, introduced significant structural changes. For the first time, the event included a scheduled order of play on the first Sunday, known as Middle Sunday, ending a long-standing tradition of rest. Additionally, officials implemented a new 10-point champions tie break rule for the final set, replacing the previous seven-point format used at 12 games all. These adjustments coincided with the centenary of Centre Court, which was celebrated on 3 July with a gathering of former champions.
The event was overshadowed by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club's decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players following the invasion of Ukraine. While other Grand Slams permitted these athletes to compete as neutrals, Wimbledon cited British government guidance, arguing that the Russian regime should not benefit from their participation. This move triggered immediate backlash. The ATP, WTA, and ITF responded by stripping the tournament of all ranking points, asserting that entry should be based on merit rather than nationality. Furthermore, the ATP and WTA each imposed $1 million fines on the AELTC and the Lawn Tennis Association.
Despite the controversy, the competition proceeded with high-stakes outcomes. Novak Djokovic secured his 21st major title by defeating Nick Kyrgios, while Elena Rybakina claimed the ladies' singles title against Ons Jabeur. The tournament also saw a record prize pool of £40,350,000, representing a 15.23% increase over 2021. While players like Andy Murray expressed frustration over the loss of ranking points, the tournament remained a central fixture of the 2022 tennis calendar, incorporating junior, wheelchair, and invitational events alongside the main draws.
