The glamorous life of a professional model is often far from reality

6 Biggest Myths about Being a Model | Modeling · 3:33 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Think modeling is all about free designer clothes, sleeping in, and skipping meals? Think again. Industry insiders Trudi Tapscott and Britt Bergmeister reveal that the profession is actually a demanding business requiring significant personal investment, early mornings, and a healthy, consistent relationship with food to maintain the body as a tool.

The common perception of modeling as a glamorous, effortless lifestyle is largely a myth. In reality, the profession is a business that demands discipline and hard work. One of the most persistent misconceptions is that models get to keep the high-end clothing they wear during shoots or fashion shows. This is simply not the case; the garments remain with the designers or stylists. Furthermore, the industry is not always fully funded by others. While clients cover travel expenses for confirmed jobs, models must often make significant personal financial investments when starting out, such as self-funding trips to major fashion hubs like Milan to secure work in the first place.

The daily schedule is equally misunderstood. Far from lounging, models often face grueling hours. Outdoor shoots are frequently dictated by natural light, requiring models to rise before dawn to catch the sunrise. In other instances, shoots may extend through the entire night. This reality stands in stark contrast to the idea of a leisurely, pampered existence. As Tapscott and Bergmeister emphasize, the work is physically and mentally demanding, and success is not guaranteed simply by signing with an agency. Securing an agent is merely the initial step; the true challenge lies in the ongoing effort to attract clients and book consistent work.

Perhaps the most damaging myth is the belief that models do not eat. Bergmeister clarifies that models do indeed eat, and many are actually obsessed with food and cooking. Because their bodies are their primary professional tools, they prioritize healthy diets, but this does not mean they starve themselves. Instead, they focus on maintaining their health while still enjoying meals and dining out. While they must be mindful of their nutrition to stay in shape, the idea that they avoid food entirely is inaccurate. Like any other professional, they treat their work as a job, balancing the demands of their career with the realities of daily life.
