The locomotive that redefined visibility and dominated North American rails for decades
In short: When the Rock Island Railroad requested a versatile new machine in 1940, they sparked a revolution. The resulting ALCO RS-1 moved away from traditional carbody designs toward a 'hood unit' layout, creating a blueprint for visibility and maneuverability that most North American locomotives still follow today.
The RS-1 was born from a specific need for a 'road switcher'—a locomotive capable of both heavy mainline hauling and precise yard switching. To achieve this, the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) moved away from the prevailing carbody designs of the early 1940s. Instead, they implemented a hood unit design, which placed the engine under a narrow hood. This significantly improved visibility for the crew, particularly when looking toward the rear, a critical requirement for the frequent reverse movements involved in switching operations.
Due to such immense success, the RS-1 boasts a longer manufacturing period than any other diesel locomotive sold in North America. Production spanned 19 years, beginning with the Rock Island #748 in March 1941 and concluding with the National of Mexico #5663 in March 1960. Even as ALCO introduced improved successors like the RS-2 and RS-3, the original RS-1 remained in continuous production.
The locomotive's impact extended into global conflict; the first 13 production units were requisitioned by the US Army for World War II. These units were eventually remanufactured into six-axle RSD-1 models to supply the Soviet Union via the Trans-Iranian Railway. While ALCO itself closed in 1969, the RS-1's legacy persists. Because spare parts have been marketed by other manufacturers, many units remain in freight service on shortline railroads or preserved in museums well into the 21st century.
