How to train your mouth muscles for a perfect foreign accent
In short: Mastering a new accent requires more than just listening; it demands physical conditioning. Voice coach Andrea Caban suggests that by treating your mouth like an athlete treats their muscles, you can achieve greater clarity and ease through specific, daily articulatory exercises.
Effective accent training involves isolating and strengthening the specific muscles used in speech. According to voice and speech coach Andrea Caban, a foundational routine begins with warming up the face and lips. This includes blowing through the lips and tongue, both voiced and unvoiced, followed by a full facial shake-out. To improve precision, one should practice touching the tongue to every part of the teeth, from the front to the back, on both the top and bottom jaws.
Advanced techniques focus on more complex movements, such as isolating the corners of the lips by pulling them back into a wide grin before relaxing them, or bunching the tongue—a movement best practiced in front of a mirror. Another critical area is the soft palate, or velum. By practicing asymmetrical yawns—yawning on the right side, then the left, then both—speakers can learn to consciously raise or drop this part of the throat, which is essential for controlling resonance.
For tongue tip agility, Caban recommends tapping the alveolar ridge—the gum ridge behind the upper teeth—using syllables like 'la, le, li, lo, lu,' resting the tongue behind the bottom teeth between each repetition. Perhaps the most effective method for preventing muscle fatigue is a technique similar to a baseball player weighting a bat before a swing. By articulating a difficult phrase, such as the famous line from Hamlet regarding speaking 'trippingly on the tongue,' while keeping the tongue stuck out, the speaker overworks the muscles so that the actual performance feels effortless.
