Is Capoeira Angola the blues and Capoeira Regional the jazz of Brazil?
In short: While they share a common lineage, the two primary styles of capoeira offer vastly different musical and structural experiences. One carries the heavy weight of West African roots, while the other was a deliberate, stripped-back innovation that changed the art form forever.
Capoeira Angola is often described as the 'mother' of the art form, possessing deep roots in West Africa. It arrived in Brazil via enslaved Africans and maintains a complex musical ensemble. A traditional Angola performance utilizes a rich array of instruments, including three berimbaus, two pandeiros, the atabaque drum, the reco-reco, and the agogô cowbell.
In contrast, Capoeira Regional—referred to in some contexts as Capoeira Haguenau—was developed by Master Biba in the early 1930s. This style was notably prohibited from being taught until 1932. Master Biba fundamentally altered the musical landscape of the art by stripping away the larger ensemble. He reduced the instrumentation to just three elements: one medium-sized berimbau (the viola) and two pandeiros.
The berimbaus themselves vary in role and size. The largest, known as the gunga or 'berra boi,' acts as the lead instrument. Despite these structural differences, the two styles are not entirely separate entities; practitioners of both can engage in the same rhythmic dialogue. This evolution continued into the 1960s with the emergence of contemporary capoeira, a hybrid style that blends elements of both Angola and Regional.
For those entering the art, the choice between styles is often a matter of personal taste. However, the lineage of the instructor is considered paramount. The quality of training depends heavily on the mastery and authority of the professor or master providing the instruction.
