The most titled aristocrat in the world lived a life of extreme wealth and scandal
In short: With approximately 50 noble titles and 14 Grandeeships of Spain, Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart was a titan of the European aristocracy. Her life spanned unimaginable luxury, from a wedding costing 20 million pesetas to a massive estate worth billions, yet it was marked by personal trauma and controversial marriages.
Born in Madrid in 1926, Cayetuna Fitz-James Stuart was the 18th Duchess of Alba and a descendant of James II and VII. Her early years were shaped by hardship; while living in the Liria Palace, her mother suffered from tuberculosis, and the Duchess recalls traumatic efforts by staff to keep her away from her ailing parent. Despite this, her social standing was unparalleled. She was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the most titled aristocrat in the world, a distinction later surpassed by Princess Victoria of Hohenlohe-Langenburg.
Her personal life often defied the rigid expectations of the Spanish nobility. Her 1947 nuptials to Don Luis Martínez de Irujo y Artázcoz were famously pricey, with the New York Times valuing the event at roughly 20 million pesetas. Later, her 1978 marriage to Jesús Aguirre y Ortiz de Zárate caused significant shock because Aguirre was illegitimate, a status that carried a social stigma in 1970s Spain. Even her third marriage to Alfonso Díez Carabantes, a civil servant 24 years her junior, faced reported objections from her children and King Juan Carlos.
The scale of her wealth was as vast as her titles. At the time of her death in 2014, her net worth was estimated at $5 billion, with her estate including significant land and treasures such as a first-edition Don Quixote and letters from Christopher Columbus. To navigate the complexities of her later years, she transferred several major titles—including the Duchess of Montoro and the Marchioness of San Vicente del Barco—to her children, ensuring the continuation of the House of Alba's legacy.
