How a tiny seed shop became a global conglomerate and China's first foreign investor
In short: From a penniless seed shop in Bangkok's Chinatown to a massive multi-national empire, the Charoen Pokphand Group has reshaped entire economies. It was the first foreign company registered in Shenzhen and has since transformed the dietary habits of hundreds of millions through its massive agricultural and retail reach.
Founded in 1921, the enterprise began as a small seed shop called Chia Tai Chung on Song Sawat Road, established by immigrant brothers Mat U Ramus and Chia Ek Chor. Starting with virtually no capital, they imported seeds from China and exported pigs and eggs to regional hubs like Hong Kong and Singapore. By the 1950s, the business pivoted toward animal feed, a move that eventually led to a vertical integration strategy: supplying farmers with chicks and feed, then purchasing the grown livestock for distribution to restaurants and grocers.
This model proved incredibly scalable. Thailand's chicken and egg supply was effectively controlled by CP Group by the 1970s. The firm's growth in China proved equally revolutionary; following the 1978 economic opening, CP acted as the nation's initial foreign investor and the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone's first registered business. In mainland China, the group is known as 'Zhèng Dà' (meaning 'positive' or 'upright') and holds a significant portion of the country's feed meal market.
Today, the conglomerate is a diversified giant with investments in 21 countries. Its footprint includes the world's largest producer of feed and shrimp, and a retail powerhouse that operates over 15,245 7-Eleven stores in Thailand—the second largest network in the world after Japan. Through subsidiaries like True Corporation, it also maintains a massive presence in telecommunications, serving over 48.8 million mobile customers across Southeast Asia.
