How sugar transforms into an acid while it exfoliates your face

In short: Most people view sugar as a simple abrasive for skin, but its chemistry is far more sophisticated. As you massage it into your pores, the granules physically break down to release chemical compounds that work in tandem with milk and oil to hydrate and renew the skin.

The efficacy of this DIY facial scrub lies in the synergy between mechanical exfoliation and chemical action. While sugar provides a physical grain for scrubbing, it also serves as a source of glycolic acid. As the sugar granules disintegrate against the surface of the skin during application, they begin to release this acid, which helps refine the skin's texture from the outside in. Complementing this is the use of whole organic milk, which contains lactic acid. Unlike the physical breakdown of sugar, the lactic acid is already present in the milk and works as a secondary exfoliating agent. To balance these active components, honey acts as a hydrating factor, while extra virgin olive oil provides an anti-inflammatory effect.

The oil serves a dual purpose: it creates a 'slip' that allows for gentle movement across sensitive areas and softens the skin to improve its overall appearance. Proper application requires a specific technique to maximize these benefits without causing irritation. The mixture should be applied in thin layers using fingertips to create tiny circles, specifically concentrating on the T-zone—the forehead, nose, and chin—where pores are more prone to clogging. Leaving the mask on for approximately five minutes allows the lactic acid from the milk and the newly released glycolic acid from the sugar to activate fully before rinsing with tepid water.

This combination of ingredients is designed to be safe for all skin types, including those that are dry or sensitive. By blending three tablespoons of milk, one tablespoon of warm honey, one cup of sugar, and two tablespoons of olive oil, you create a formula that addresses both the need for deep cleaning and intense hydration.
