The mechanical anatomy of light: how to build a lamp

The construction of a lamp begins with structural integrity. The base must be sturdy enough to support the weight of the shade and keep the rod perfectly vertical. When using a hard material for a base, a hole must be drilled to accommodate the rod. To secure the rod, a washer and nut are used; these can be sunk into the base using a hammer and chisel or a sharp knife to create a flat bottom. Alternatively, rubber feet or felt pads can be used to prevent wobbling without carving the material.
Electrical safety is managed through a specific threading process. The cord must be threaded through the rod, ensuring the plug end exits the bottom without rubbing against sharp edges. At the top, a locknut secures the cord, followed by the neck. The most critical mechanical step involves the 'underwriter’s knot'—a specific technique where wires are tied into a 'Y' shape and curled back through loops. This knot is essential because it prevents the wires from slipping back through the lamp rod during assembly.
The final assembly involves the bulb socket and the harp. The neutral wire (typically ribbed) is wrapped around the silver screw, while the hot wire is wrapped around the gold screw. These must be tightened securely. The harp, which holds the shade, is then attached to the harp bottom. Domestic illumination has relied on this method since 1880, when Thomas Edison received a patent for an incandescent lamp.
