How to reclaim your roof from invasive moss growth
In short: A mossy roof is more than an eyesore; it is a biological takeover. To restore your shingles, you must combine physical removal with chemical treatment and a clever chemical deterrent that uses the rain itself to keep the roof clean.
Restoring a roof requires a careful balance of physical labor and chemical application. According to general contractor Tom Silva, the process begins with safety: a harness system must be secured following the manufacturer’s specific instructions. Once safe, the loose moss can be cleared using a push broom. However, cleaning alone is insufficient; to prevent the moss from returning, a zinc strip must be installed near the roof's ridge. This strip works through a passive mechanism: when it rains, water picks up zinc particulates and deposits them across the roof, creating an environment that inhibits moss growth.
The installation of this zinc preventer requires precision to maintain the roof's integrity. The strip should be rolled out so that approximately half is tucked under a course of shingles and the other half remains exposed. To secure it, roofing nails are driven halfway through the strip. To prevent leaks, a bead of roofing cement must be applied around each nail before they are driven through, with a second bead applied on top of the nail once it is fully seated. This ensures that the holes made by the nails are properly sealed.
The final stage involves a chemical solution to kill any remaining moss spores. A mixture of roughly 1/3 gallon of bleach to 1.5 gallons of water is sprayed across the surface. To protect the landscape, it is vital to spray any plants or grass below the roof with water both before and after the process to mitigate damage from bleach runoff. For safety, the application should begin at the bottom of the roof and work upward, preventing the worker from walking on wet, slippery surfaces.
