Why professionals avoid saddle valves when connecting your refrigerator's ice maker

In short: When installing an ice maker, many homeowners reach for a saddle valve, but plumbing experts suggest a more robust approach. By using a T fitting and a multi-turn shutoff valve, you can create a reliable connection that avoids the common pitfalls of cheaper, less durable plumbing methods.

For a professional-grade ice maker installation, plumbing expert Richard Trethewey recommends moving away from standard plastic tubing and saddle valves. Instead, the preferred method involves using copper tubing and a more permanent connection to the home's plumbing system. This process begins by shutting off the main water supply and locating the nearest cold water line to determine the optimal path for the new line.

The technical mechanism involves drilling a hole near the cold water line and running uncoiled copper tubing through it. To ensure a leak-proof seal, the installer must clean the pipe with an abrasive cloth before applying flux to the outside of a T fitting and the inside of the pipe. The components—the pipe, the T, and a multi-turn shutoff valve—are then soldered together. The copper tubing is then attached to the other side of the shutoff valve using a compression connection.

Precision is vital during the installation to ensure the appliance remains functional and accessible. After the connection is made, the copper tubing should be fed into the opening at the back of the refrigerator. Crucially, installers should leave extra slack high on the fridge; this ensures the appliance can be moved in and out for cleaning or maintenance without straining the new plumbing. Once the fridge is positioned, the water supply can be safely turned back on.

This method relies on materials typically available at home centers and plumbing supply houses, providing a durable alternative to the temporary feel of many DIY solutions.
