You don't need to track every card to beat the house

In short: Most beginners think card counting requires superhuman memory or tracking every single card in the deck. In reality, the most effective method is a simplified system of tracking point values. By identifying which cards are missing, players can predict when the remaining deck favors them over the casino.

The high-low system is the most fundamental method used by card counters. Rather than memorizing the exact location of every card, players assign point values to the cards as they are dealt. In this system, cards with a value of 10 and Aces are assigned a value of -1. Conversely, low cards—specifically 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 6s—are assigned a value of +1. Cards like 7s, 8s, and 9s are considered neutral and do not affect the count.

The logic behind these values is based on the player's advantage. When 10s and Aces (the -1 cards) leave the deck, the remaining shoe becomes less favorable for the player. When low cards (the +1 cards) leave, the shoe becomes 'richer' in high-value cards. As the game progresses, the running count will skew into either positive or negative territory. A high positive count indicates a deck saturated with 10s and Aces, which increases the player's probability of winning.

Knowing the count dictates two primary actions: betting and strategy. When the count is significantly positive, counters increase their bet sizes to maximize profit from the favorable deck. If the count is extremely negative, a counter might choose not to play at all or bet the bare minimum. Furthermore, counting allows for deviations from 'basic strategy.' For instance, a counter might hit a 12 against a 5 in a cool deck—a move standard strategy would advise against—because they know the remaining cards are likely to be low.

Ultimately, card counting is about identifying the mathematical tilt of the shoe. By tracking these plus and minus values, players can determine the exact moment to increase their stakes or adjust their hitting rules based on the predetermined point of the count.
