Why your aquarium is turning into a swamp of green algae
In short: Green water in a fish tank isn't just a mess; it is a sign of a biological imbalance. While your fish may not mind the murky hue, the underlying cause is a surplus of energy and nutrients that allows algae to thrive directly in the water column.
Green water is caused by free-floating, suspended algae. This occurs when there is an excess of nutrients—specifically nitrates and phosphates—combined with high levels of light energy. When these conditions are met, algae no longer need to attach to a substrate to grow; they can flourish directly within the water column, creating a thick, green soup. This is most common in tanks placed in direct sunlight or those that are overfed, as the waste products provide the fuel for rapid algal blooms.
To address the issue, hobbyists can choose between rapid chemical fixes and more gradual biological methods. Commercial algicides, available in pill or liquid form, can kill floating algae quickly, but they may be toxic to the beneficial plants and algae on rocks that fish consume. A more targeted mechanical solution is a UV sterilizer, which can clear water in a few days, or a diatom filter. For a more holistic approach, many keepers prefer 'starving' the algae by dimming lights, performing regular water changes, cleaning filters, and adding beneficial bacteria to the tank.
Prevention is the most sustainable strategy for maintaining clarity. Because the original cause of a bloom will persist, owners should minimize direct sunlight and avoid leaving aquarium lights on 24/7. Setting a specific photoperiod of 8 to 12 hours using a timer can prevent the tank from being treated as a permanent night light. Additionally, avoiding overcrowding and overfeeding helps keep nitrate and phosphate levels low, making it significantly harder for algae to take root in the first place.
