The secret to vibrant neon nails lies in what you paint underneath

In short: Achieving a bright, 'popped out' neon finish is more about your base layer than the neon polish itself. To prevent colors from looking dull, you must master the art of the sponge-applied gradient, using specific undercoats to ensure your vibrant oranges and pinks truly shine.

The foundation of a successful neon ombre, often referred to as a 'Tequila Sunrise' style, depends on the preparation of the nail bed. To ensure the neon pigments appear bright and even, you should apply a base coat followed by two coats of white or a nude shade. This underlying layer acts as a canvas that allows the neon colors to emerge with maximum intensity.

The application process requires a non-porous, squishy makeup sponge. The goal is to paint the polish onto a corner of the sponge without making it too 'gloppy'; you should still be able to see the sponge's pores. If the polish is too thick, it may not dry, so the 'less is more' rule is essential. If the layer is too heavy, you can tap the excess onto a paper towel.

To create the gradient, start at the nail tip and use a gentle tapping motion, perhaps in a circular pattern to follow the nail's shape. For a classic look, concentrate the first color, such as orange, at the tip and fade it toward the center, covering about two-thirds to three-quarters of the nail. You can then layer a second color, like hot pink, covering only about one-third of the nail to darken the orange.

If you accidentally get polish on the sides of the nail, do not worry; because the ombre layers are applied so thinly, they can be easily removed with a Q-tip. For added depth, you can even use the same sponging technique with a dark metallic polish to create a soft, rounded tip instead of a harsh French manicure.
