Mastering the flow: how to build a basic hip-hop routine
In short: Professional choreography isn't just about complex athleticism; it is rooted in timing, personality, and specific rhythmic counts. To move like a pro, you must first learn to 'mark' your movements—executing the steps at a controlled pace before adding full energy and musicality.
Professional choreographer Randy R.C. Connor, who has worked with high-profile artists including Britney Spears, Jay-Z, and Janet Jackson, emphasizes that hip-hop is fundamentally about personality. While the technical steps provide a framework, the goal of a routine is to have fun and express oneself, whether dancing at home, in a bathroom, or at a club. Connor has collaborated with Prince and P. Diddy Combs as well.
A basic routine is built on specific counts, typically organized into sets of eight. For example, one foundational sequence involves alternating legs with a 'drop' and an outward palm position on the first two counts, followed by a backward swimming motion that pulls up on count four. This builds muscle memory for transitions between different movements. The sequence begins by taking it from the top.
Another core technique involves contracting and switching directions. One specific move requires a rhythmic pattern of 'single, single, double, double.' To master these, dancers use a process called 'marking,' where they perform the steps slowly to ensure perfect timing before attempting them at full speed with music. This progression ensures that the quick transitions remain fluid rather than jagged. Dancers perform these movements sideways to improve visibility during instruction.
The transition from marking to performing involves picking up the tempo. By breaking down complex sequences into manageable counts—like five, six, seven, eight followed by one, two, and three, four—dancers can layer 'bounces' and double-time movements onto a steady beat. This systematic approach transforms isolated steps into a cohesive routine. This specific routine is designated as hip-hop routine number one.
