Mastering the advanced salsa dip requires trust and precise connection
In short: An advanced salsa dip is more than a simple movement; it is a high-stakes dance of coordination. Success depends on the leader maintaining a closed connection and the follower finding the perfect space to lean, ensuring both partners remain secure throughout the transition.
An advanced salsa dip begins with the standard basic step, following the rhythmic count of one, two, three, five, six, seven. For the follower, the movement involves opening out by fully extending the arm. This is immediately followed by a free spin to the left, where the follower must spot the leader while maintaining constant physical contact.
The mechanics of the lead are critical for safety. The gentleman should keep his movements 'salsa small' and maintain a closed connection by keeping his bicep engaged. As the follower spins, the leader should lift his arm to create space for the follower to hug him. To ensure the follower is secure, the leader can place his forearm or hand on the follower's back or shoulder, depending on their respective heights and sizes.
Precision is vital for the follower to avoid injury or social awkwardness. While leaning back, the follower must ensure her left elbow does not rise up, instead moving over the leader's shoulder to find the proper space. Once the connection is established—often by the follower's left hand finding the leader's shoulder—the move can be completed. When rising from the dip, the partners can choose to lead with the hips or the head.
Ultimately, the advanced dip is a test of mutual trust. The follower must feel safe before letting go of the connection, and the leader must provide a secure anchor to allow the follower to lean back confidently.
