Why less is more when drawing freehand in Adobe Illustrator

How to Draw & Edit with the Pencil Tool | Adobe Illustrator · 4:49 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: The Pencil Tool offers an organic alternative to the precision of the Pen Tool, but it comes with a hidden technical cost. If you aren't careful with your settings, a single freehand stroke can clutter your digital canvas with an unmanageable number of anchor points.

Unlike the Pen Tool, which relies on clicking specific points to build a path, the Pencil Tool allows for a more natural, freehand approach. The software attempts to follow your hand movements to develop a path, but the resulting line is heavily influenced by two critical settings: Fidelity and Smoothness. Fidelity determines how closely the digital path adheres to your actual pixel-by-pixel movements. If you increase the Fidelity toward the curve setting, the software will alter your input to create smoother arcs rather than following your exact path. This method serves as an alternative to using predefined shapes for creating your artwork.

Smoothness controls the density of the path's architecture by determining how many anchor points are placed along the line. While it might seem intuitive to seek maximum accuracy, high-precision drawing can lead to a 'million anchor points' for complex, erratic strokes. This creates significant technical debt, as a path cluttered with unnecessary points becomes much harder to manipulate later. The software's ability to automatically follow your hand movements allows you to generate any desired shape without manual clicking. However, the complexity of the path increases significantly if the smoothness setting is lowered.

To achieve a balance between organic feel and usability, the most effective approach is to keep both Fidelity and Smoothness at low settings. By increasing Smoothness, you reduce the number of anchor points, making the path easier to edit. Furthermore, you can adjust the editing ratio to ensure the path only responds to changes when you are within a specific pixel proximity, allowing the rest of the line to remain stable and unchanged. This specific pixel-based threshold ensures that the line stays the same unless you move within a certain distance. This allows for more controlled modifications to your freehand work.
