The secret of the spelling trick is a hidden key
In short: Magicians often make it seem like they are sensing a card's location through pure intuition. In reality, they are using a physical anchor called a key card. By tracking one specific card, a performer can navigate a shuffled deck and find a volunteer's choice with mathematical certainty.
The core of this specific card trick relies on a technique known as a 'key card.' In the demonstration, the magician identifies the bottom card of the deck—the nine of clubs—before the volunteer even makes a selection. Because the magician knows this card is at the bottom, they can track its position relative to any card the volunteer chooses to place on top of it. The magician uses the bottom card as a constant reference point. This allows him to know the volunteer's card is lost in the deck. He pretends his ability to find it is unreliable. This setup happens before the spectator even picks a card.
When the volunteer places their card on top and performs a cut, the magician ensures the key card ends up directly above the chosen card. By 'sensing' the deck, the magician is actually scanning for that specific nine of clubs. Once located, they know the volunteer's card is the very next one in the sequence. This allows the magician to bring the chosen card to the top of the deck while maintaining the illusion of searching. The performer pretends to sense the card's location through intuition. He tells the volunteer that his psychic powers don't always work. He asks the volunteer to help him find it. This creates a narrative of shared effort.
To add a layer of psychological misdirection, the magician uses a 'spelling' effect. They ask the volunteer to spell out the name of the card (e.g., 'S-I-X-C-L-U-B-S'). While the volunteer believes the spelling is the mechanism for the reveal, the magician has already located the card physically. The spelling provides a narrative justification for the magician to 'discover' the card at the exact moment the volunteer finishes the final letter. The magician places the cards back on the deck in reverse order. This happens because he dealt them into a pile. The volunteer's card ends up at the bottom of that specific pile. He then justifies the spelling as a way to find the card.
