Why you cannot simply screw a porch swing into a vinyl ceiling

To solve this, general contractor Tom Silva of Ask This Old House demonstrates a method of adding internal reinforcement to the ceiling's framework.
The process begins by removing the vinyl ceiling using a hammer and prybar, extending to the furthest point where the swing will hang. If the existing structure is insufficient, a new 2x4" piece of lumber must be integrated. For the best fit, this timber should be hammered into position, ideally over an existing furring strip to manage the added depth. This new component is then secured firmly using wood screws.
Once the structural reinforcement is in place, the vinyl panels are reinstalled so they overlap the new structure. A critical nuance in the drilling process involves preventing the vinyl from cracking. Silva recommends using a thicker drill bit initially to pierce the vinyl, before switching to a thinner bit to complete the pilot hole through the furking strip and the new 2x4" support.
The final step involves mounting the swing's brackets into these pilot holes. The brackets are hand-tightened using lag screws and a wrench. By repeating this process for the second side of the swing, you create a stable, load-bearing mounting point that transforms a decorative ceiling into a functional piece of architecture.
