How to install a gas lantern in a historic home
In short: Installing a gas lantern on an 1890s home is a professional task. Experts must navigate old walls and manage copper lines to ensure safety. After drilling through the wall and securing the tubing, the installer must test for leaks and purge the line before finally lighting the flame.
According to plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey, installing a gas lantern is a professional-level task. The process begins with strategic planning, where one must determine the ideal placement by considering access to the space behind the wall, the proximity to the gas meter, and the distance from the entry door.
Once the location is set, a hole must be drilled into the wall to accommodate the gas line. A 1/4-inch copper line is then fished through the hole and into the connection point. To guarantee sufficient slack for a correct fit, thread the copper tubing through the lantern's bracket and fix it to the wall prior to establishing gas connections.
After the lantern is mounted to the bracket, the installer must cut into the main gas line to add the necessary fittings and connections. Once the line is secure and the gas is turned back on, the system must be tested for leaks. The final step is to purge the line by opening the lantern until a steady stream of gas flows through it.
Once the line is purged, the lantern can be lit by opening the gas valve and using a match. Once lit, the lantern will remain lit as long as the gas line remains open. This specific installation was demonstrated in St. Louis, Missouri, with assistance from Bach Construction, Inc. of Cedar Hill, Missouri.
