Why your hot water disappears halfway through a bath
In short: When a homeowner's bathtub turns cold before it is full, the culprit is often a misunderstanding of how combi units function. Plumbing expert Richard Trethewey demonstrates how to install a reserve tank to solve this shortage.
The issue often arises because a homeowner assumes they have an on-demand system, when they actually have a combi unit with a water tank. This leads to a mismatch in flow rates that exhausts the hot water supply mid-fill. To fix this, Trethewey installs a reserve tank, a project costing approximately $2,000.
The installation requires disconnecting the electrical supply and connecting the tankless inlet to a stainless-steel or bronze component. Once the system is purged through free-flowing water, the storage tank is set to the preferred temperature. For safety and efficiency, the boiler's high limit should be adjusted to remain at least 20 degrees Fahrenheit above the storage tank's setting.
