Mastering the final stages of installing your residential irrigation system for a lush lawn

How to Install a Sprinkler System Part 2 · 3:24 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Transitioning from trenching to a fully automated watering system requires precision in plumbing and electrical wiring. By carefully sealing joints, testing for leaks, and calibrating riser heights, you transform basic PVC pipes into a professional-grade irrigation network. Learn how to finalize your installation and automate your garden's hydration cycle effectively.

The installation process moves from laying pipes to securing the infrastructure. Using PVC solvent, you connect pipes with half-inch fittings, employing T-fittings for sprinkler heads and 90-degree elbows for section ends. Risers, specifically 12-inch cutoff models, are threaded into these fittings after being wrapped with four to five turns of tape to ensure a watertight seal. Before finalizing, it is critical to perform a flush test by opening valves individually to clear the lines, ensuring water flows correctly from the far risers.

Leak detection is a vital phase before burying the system. With sprinkler heads attached but closed, you turn on the water to inspect the piping for any failures, ignoring the heads themselves. Any identified leaks must be addressed with additional tape or solvent until the system is completely sealed. Once verified, the pipes are covered with dirt, though the manifold valves must remain exposed for future maintenance. The final physical adjustment involves using a hacksaw to trim risers so that each sprinkler head sits exactly two to three inches above the ground level.

The final phase integrates electrical control. You mount an irrigation timer near an outlet and run 18-gauge copper wire to the valves, ensuring you have one extra conductor beyond your total valve count. After securing the wire and connecting it to the timer, you perform a manual test of each station to confirm functionality. Once the system is confirmed to be operating correctly, an irrigation control box is placed over the valves, and the timer is set to automatic. While modern systems rely on these precise timers, the ancient world remains mysterious; historians still do not know how the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, were watered.
