When traditional gutters fail, how do you redirect roof water?

How to Install an Alternative to Gutters | Ask This Old House · 8:51 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: While standard gutters are usually the most effective way to move water away from a home, they require a downspout to function. This video demonstrates how to install a rain dispersal system when no suitable downspout location exists.

General contractor Tom Silva demonstrates the installation of a rain dispersal system as a viable alternative for large roof sections. The process involves removing old hardware using a hammer, prybar, and drill driver, then mounting brackets to the fascia board. For proper placement, brackets should be positioned at least 4" below the roof edge and 1.5" from the drip edge, with louvres clipped into the brackets to complete the system.
