The secret to level kitchen cabinets starts with finding your lowest point
In short: Installing kitchen cabinets is not about following a straight line, but about navigating the imperfections of your home. General contractor Tom Silva reveals that the key to a professional finish lies in identifying ceiling and floor irregularities before a single screw is ever driven into the wall.
Precision in cabinetry begins with an assessment of the room's structural deviations. Rather than assuming walls and floors are perfectly flat, installers must first check the ceiling for level in two directions. If the ceiling is uneven, the lowest point must be identified and used as the primary measuring reference. For upper cabinets, this involves measuring exactly 33 inches down from that low spot to establish a consistent baseline for the cabinet bottoms.
The process for base cabinets follows a similar logic of compensation. By using a 6-foot level to find the highest spot on the floor, installers can measure upward 34.5 inches to mark the top of the base units. This ensures that even if the floor slopes, the tops of the cabinets remain aligned along a level line around the kitchen walls.
Securing the units requires careful management of voids and alignment. For upper cabinets, installers must transfer stud locations to the cabinet backs and pre-drill clearance holes. Once the first corner cabinet is held in place, it is secured with a screw into the stud, using shims to ensure the unit is plumb. For base cabinets, the sink unit is typically installed first, centered under the window. To prevent gaps, a shim should be slipped behind the cabinet before the 3-inch screws are fully tightened. For freestanding elements like islands or peninsulas, the cabinets are secured by screwing 2x4 blocking directly into the floor.
The final stage involves fine-tuning the aesthetics and functionality. This includes trimming excess shims with a utility knife, installing decorative end panels, and fabricating filler strips where cabinets meet the range. Once the base units are set, the process concludes with the creation of a template for the new countertop.
