In short: You don't need expensive salon tools to achieve a perfect hairstyle. By repurposing a basic dress sock, you can create a versatile hair accessory that mimics the professional foam doughnuts used by hairdressers for years, allowing for everything from sleek styles to effortless, tousled looks.

The sock bun is a versatile hairstyling technique that relies on a DIY hair doughnut. To begin, select a men's or ladies' dress sock, preferably in a color that matches your hair. The process begins by cutting approximately one inch off the toe of the sock to create a tube shape. This tube is then rolled down on itself to create a universal-sized doughnut. If a smaller version is required, one can cut the entire leg and toe off a pair of pantyhose and roll it down similarly.

The mechanism of the bun relies on the tension and volume provided by the rolled fabric. Once the hair is secured into a ponytail—which can be positioned high, low, or in a series—the sock bun is slipped over the ponytail. For the best results, the cut end of the sock should point downward toward the ends of the hair. This allows the hair to wrap naturally around the fabric. To ensure the hair stays secure, the bun should be rolled down as tight as possible, followed by two additional wraps.

Achieving a professional finish involves managing hair texture and placement. To prevent a 'floppy back' in the ponytail, tilt your head backward while brushing the hair up to ensure maximum tightness at the nape of the neck. Once the bun is rolled, a light, flexible hairspray can be applied. If flyaways remain, a rattail comb can be used to wrap from the top to the bottom of the bun, tucking the loose strands underneath the structure for a polished look.
