Why a standard presser foot can break your sewing machine

How to Make a Zigzag Stitch | Sewing Machine · 4:11 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: When you switch from a straight stitch to a zigzag, your machine's mechanics change fundamentally. The needle begins a rhythmic dance, bouncing from left to right. If you fail to swap your equipment to match this new motion, you risk snapping your needle or damaging the machine itself.

This change affects two primary dimensions: width and length. The stitch width determines how far the needle travels from side to side, while the stitch length dictates the distance between each individual stitch peak. You can adjust these settings by twisting the pattern dial to your preferred stitch type. This allows you to choose between a very long or a very short stitch pattern.

A critical technical requirement for this process is changing the presser foot. A standard foot designed for straight stitching features a narrow opening for the needle. Because a zigzag needle moves laterally, it requires a specialized foot with a wider opening to accommodate its left-to-right movement. Using a straight-stitch foot during a zigzag operation can lead to broken needles or mechanical damage. Many machines feature a dedicated width dial, though some integrate this control into the main stitch selector. You can experiment by setting the width to its maximum possible setting.

Once the correct foot is installed, the fabric should be positioned under the foot with the threads tucked toward the back of the machine. For precise results, one might use a seam guide, such as a 5/8-inch guide, to maintain alignment. The final appearance of the stitch is highly customizable; for example, one can set a stitch length of 2.5 or reduce it to nearly 1 millimeter between peaks to create a denser pattern. To swap your foot, simply engage the quick release lever to detach the old one. When positioning your fabric, ensure the threads are directed towards the rear of the machine.
