In short: The intricate millefiori style is famous for its complex floral patterns. By using a specific layering and slicing technique, you can replicate these sophisticated designs at home using bakeable modeling clay, transforming simple lumps of color into ornate, multi-layered beads.

Millefiori is an Italian term where 'mille' translates to thousand and 'fiori' means flowers. Historically associated with glassmaking, the style is defined by its vibrant, multicolored patterns that appear as tiny blossoms when sliced. To recreate this effect with modeling clay, you must build a 'cane'—a long cylinder of clay featuring distinct internal layers.

The process begins by stacking three different colors of clay into rectangles, roughly 2 inches by 1.5 inches and 1 inch thick. These are repeatedly cut in half and restacked to create a multi-layered block. From this block, you slice long pieces to wrap around a central cylinder of a third color. By alternating the colors of these slices as they surround the core, you ensure that each subsequent cross-section reveals a unique pattern.

Once the first cane is formed, the process is repeated with two other colors to create three distinct canes. These are then sliced into flat beads of uniform thickness. To achieve the cleanest edges, the clay can be chilled in a freezer briefly before slicing. Finally, holes are pierced through the sides so that the internal patterns face outward, and the pieces are baked at 275 degrees for 15 minutes per quarter inch of thickness.

This method relies on the principle of geometric cross-sections. Every time you slice the cane, you are exposing a new arrangement of the concentric layers you built earlier. By varying the core colors and the sequence of the outer slices, you can produce a wide variety of unique designs from the same basic materials.
