The military offers a 10 percent guaranteed return for service members
In short: While traditional savings accounts offer meager returns, the Savings Deposit Program (SDP) provides a high-yield vehicle for those in designated combat zones. It allows eligible personnel to compound interest at a rate that significantly outpaces commercial options, turning deployment into a strategic financial building block.
The Savings Deposit Program (SDP), managed by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service, is designed specifically for uniformed service members deployed to designated combat zones, qualified hazardous duty areas, or specific contingency operations outside the U.S. To qualify, a member must serve for more than 30 consecutive days or at least one day per month for three consecutive months while receiving Hostile Fire Pay.
The mechanism is straightforward but powerful: deposits of up to $10,000 earn a guaranteed 10 percent annual interest rate. This interest compounds quarterly. For example, over a 10-month period, a $10,000 deposit could yield nearly $860 in interest—a stark contrast to the roughly $337 earned in a standard 4% savings account or just $84 in a 1% account.
Participation begins by contacting a U.S. finance office before deployment to handle paperwork. Once eligible, members can deposit unallotted pay (money remaining after deductions) or bonuses in $5 increments until the day they depart the combat zone. A unique feature of the SDP is that interest continues to accrue for up to 90 days after departure from the zone.
Liquidity is restricted to preserve the growth of the principal. While members can withdraw accrued interest quarterly while still deployed, withdrawing the principal requires a written authorization from a unit commander to address emergency health or welfare risks for the member or their dependents. Once the 90-day post-departure window closes, members must transfer their funds to another interest-earning account.
