Restoring the integrity of hardwood floors without replacing the entire room

How to Patch Strip Flooring | This Old House · 4:45 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Learn the precise technique for repairing damaged hardwood-strip flooring. General contractor Tom Silva demonstrates how to surgically replace a single damaged board while maintaining the continuity of your floor.

The process involves a systematic removal of the damaged section followed by a custom fit for the replacement. After scoring a cut line with a utility knife and drilling 5/8-inch holes, the damaged center is chiseled out. The replacement board must then be planed to the exact width of the gap and secured using carpenter's glue and a scrap block.

To ensure a seamless finish, the new wood is sanded with 320-grit discs and finished with at least four coats of high-gloss urethane. This method preserves the original character of the home while addressing structural wear.
