How to add harmonic color to your bass lines with multiple notes

How to Play Double Stops & Triple Stops | Bass Guitar · 3:04 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Bassists often focus on single-note melodies, but playing two or three notes simultaneously can transform a flat line into a rich, warm texture. By mastering double and triple stops, you move beyond simple rhythm into the realm of sophisticated melodic coloring.

Double stops involve striking two notes at once, while triple stops require three. While these techniques are less common for bass guitarists than for other stringed instruments, they serve as a powerful tool for creating 'colorful' and 'warm' arrangements. The goal is not to replace the foundational role of the bass but to enhance it with harmonic depth.

A primary method for practicing these sounds is using intervals like major thirds. For example, playing a G on the fifth fret of the D-string simultaneously with a B on the fourth fret of the G-string creates a distinct melodic shape. To execute this physically, players can use a 'raking' motion with the right hand to strike both strings in one fluid movement.

To expand these techniques into full melodies, players can look at scales. While a G-scale's initial four tones on the D-string comprise G, A, B, and C, those same positions on the G-string yield B, C, D, and E. By playing these in pairs, you create moving harmonies. Rather than just following a scale linearly, it is often more effective to think 'top down.' This means establishing a primary melody shape first, then identifying a second note that provides the desired color.

For even greater space, bassists can utilize 'tenths.' A major tenth is essentially a major third shifted up one octave. Conversely, minor tenths are played by moving three strings up while staying on the same fret.
