In music theory, the concept of modes is often misunderstood as a collection of entirely different scales. However, the reality is more about perspective than new ingredients. If you are already familiar with the C major scale, you possess all the necessary notes to play every mode. The fundamental difference lies not in the notes themselves,' but in which note you choose as your tonal center.

To understand this, consider the C major scale. When you play from C to C, it sounds like a standard major scale. But if you take those exact same notes and begin and end your sequence on D, you are playing the D Dorian mode. The sequence becomes D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D. While the pitch collection is unchanged, the melodic character shifts significantly.

This pattern continues through the remaining modes of the major scale. Starting on the third note, E, creates the Phrygian mode. Moving to the fourth note, F, results in Lydian. The fifth note, G, produces the Mixolydian mode, while the sixth note, A, gives us Aeolian. Finally, starting on the seventh note, B, results in the Locrian mode.

Essentially, modes are a way of recontextualizing the major scale. While the notes are one and the same, the shift in focus—and the specific chords that accompany each mode—creates the distinct emotional flavors associated with each scale. It is all a matter of how you hear the music.
