Can a few simple precautions prevent a holiday fire tragedy?
In short: Most home fires are preventable, yet they still cause thousands of injuries and many deaths every year. Whether it is a real Christmas tree or a decorative candle, understanding the basic mechanics of fire can help you protect your home and loved ones from accidental ignition.
Fire requires three essential components to ignite: a heat source, fuel, and oxygen. Common fuels include wood, paper, plastic, and furniture, while ignition sources include heaters, naked flames, and electrical equipment. To minimize risk, it is vital to keep these sources of ignition separate from flammable substances and ensure exit routes remain unobstructed.
During the holidays, specific hazards emerge. If you use a real Christmas tree, it should be kept watered and away from heat sources; it typically only lasts about 4 to 6 weeks before needing removal. For artificial trees, it is important to check that they have been UL tested to withstand fire. If an artificial tree does catch fire, do not attempt to extinguish it; instead, get out immediately and call 9-1-1.
Candles and smoking materials are also significant risks. Always blow out candles when leaving a room and ensure they are secured in proper holders away from materials like curtains. If a decorative candle starts a fire, you may have time to use a fire extinguisher, but if the room itself catches fire, you must evacuate and call 9-1-1 immediately.
General safety also involves maintaining working smoke alarms. The risk of fatal fire injuries increases 11-fold for households lacking functional smoke alarms. For those in rented accommodation, landlords are legally required to ensure smoke alarms are on every storey and are checked at the start of each new tenancy.
