How to revive a historic landscape from an overgrown backyard
In short: Transforming a neglected garden into a period-inspired masterpiece requires more than just weeding. By using historical designs—such as those from a protégé of Frederick Law Olmsted—as a blueprint, you can reimagine your outdoor space while honoring its heritage through strategic planting and careful structural restoration.
Reimagining a historic landscape begins with a rigorous restoration process. According to landscape designer Jenn Nawada, the first step is clearing the site by pulling weeds from their roots and using a rake to remove larger brush. If certain plants are salvageable, they should be carefully transplanted using a border or transplant spade. To ensure success, dig around the root ball, lift it, and keep it on a tarp until it is time to replant. Any perennial plants that can be saved should remain in their current locations to maintain the garden's continuity.
Structural elements and plant health are equally vital to the design. To create a makeshift trellis, one can attach climbing vines to string tied between nails in a fence. When preparing new plants, remove them from plastic canisters by tapping them out from the bottom and gently teasing out the roots. To ensure ideal development, excavate pits double the root ball's width while remaining slightly shallower, making sure the root mass aligns with the ground level.
The final touches involve careful layering and maintenance. When planting bulbs, use a hand trowel to dig a hole a few inches deep. Once all plants are in the ground, apply approximately two inches of mulch with a rake, taking care not to cover the stems, as this can suffocate the plant. Finally, water the area thoroughly until the plants are fully established.
