Your feet may hold the map to your hip and knee pain
In short: Reflexology suggests that specific zones on the outer edge of the foot correspond to the joints of the lower body. By applying targeted pressure to a small triangular area, practitioners aim to address hip and knee discomfort through a system of interconnected reflexes.
The practice of foot reflexology relies on identifying specific anatomical markers to locate reflex zones. To find the area corresponding to the hips and knees, one must locate the base of the fifth metatarsal on the outer lateral aspect of the foot and the top of the calcaneus (heel bone). The target area is a small triangle situated between these two landmarks.
Techniques for stimulating these reflexes vary in intensity and movement. One primary method is 'thumb walking,' which involves a rhythmic, downward bending motion of the thumb into the tissue while maintaining constant pressure. Another technique, associated with Dr. Manzanares, involves a 'press and slide' motion, where the practitioner applies firm pressure before sliding into the reflex zone. For more localized stimulation, 'point pressure' can be used to identify changes in tissue texture.
A key principle in this practice is the holistic approach to pain. Even if a person experiences pain on only one side of the body, reflexology dictates working on both feet. This is based on the idea that pain on one side does not necessarily mean the source of the issue is localized to that same side. Practitioners may also incorporate 'finger walking' to address the lower back and lymphatic groin, as well as thumb walking on the heel to treat the entire pelvic region.
Because these techniques can be quite intense, especially for women, it is important to monitor the recipient's reaction. If the pressure becomes too deep, the practitioner should ease up. The goal is to interact with the tissue to find specific points of change, providing a comprehensive treatment that covers the hip, knee, and surrounding pelvic structures.
