In short: Replacing a worn-out vinyl floor with ceramic tile is a transformative home improvement project. By following professional steps—from preparing the subfloor with cement board to the final grouting—you can create a durable, high-quality surface that lasts much longer than peeling vinyl tiles.

Transforming a bathroom floor requires more than just laying new material over the old. According to general contractor Tom Silva, the process begins by removing existing baseboard trim with a pry bar and peeling up the old vinyl tiles using a putty knife. Once the area is clear, it is essential to inspect the subfloor to ensure it is properly secured before proceeding with the installation.

A critical step in the transition from vinyl to ceramic is the installation of a cement board base. This board should be scored with a carbide tip knife and snapped to size, much like drywall. To ensure a stable foundation, the cement board must be secured to the subfloor using cement screws spaced approximately 8 inches apart. It is also vital to ensure the board extends underneath the toilet flange and that all seams are covered with mesh tape.

The installation of the tiles themselves involves a precise sequence. After dry-fitting the tiles to plan cuts, a wet saw is used for precision. A notched trowel is used to apply thinset to the cement board, and the tiles are laid into place. For tricky areas, such as around the flange, nippers can be utilized. Once the tiles are set, the thinset must cure for 24 hours before the final step of grouting can begin. Finally, the vanity and toilet can be reinstalled to complete the renovation.
