Why a single broken spoke might mean your entire wheel is doomed
In short: A wobbling wheel is more than a nuisance; it is a sign of structural failure. While you can replace one broken spoke, finding two or three often signals that the entire wheel has lost its essential tension and requires a total replacement.
When a bicycle wheel begins to wobble, the culprit is often a spoke that has snapped. These breaks most frequently occur at the bend, which serves as the weakest point of the component, though they can also fail where the spoke meets the nipple. To identify the damage, you must carefully feel around the rim to check for further fractures. If the damage is isolated to one spoke, a repair is possible; however, if multiple spokes are broken, the wheel's tension is likely too compromised to save.
The repair process is a delicate balancing act of measurement and pattern matching. After removing the damaged spoke—taking care not to scratch the rim—you must determine the exact length needed using a millimeter ruler. Once you have a replacement, you must thread it through the wheel following the original lacing pattern, such as a radial, 2-cross, or the common 3-cross pattern. Applying spoke prep to the threads can help ensure the nipple stays securely in place.
Precision is vital, as an error in tensioning or lacing can cause expensive damage to the rim. After installation, the wheel should be placed in a truing stand to ensure it is once again 'true.' Finally, the rim strip must be addressed. For single-walled rims, a rubberized strip suffices, but these can become brittle and cause punctures. For double-walled rims, a stronger cloth strip is necessary to prevent the inner tube from being cut by the spoke holes.
